Student Research Grant

VU China Center Research Grants
Up to 15 grants for research projects related to China each year.
Average grant level of $1,500 depending on nature and length of project.
Grant support for travel and living expenses while conducting research project.
Available from 2002 to 2005.

Eligibility:
All VU full-time undergraduate students.
Grant is open to all majors.

Kinds of Research:
Research projects can take on a number of forms: independent studies, extended course work, or junior or senior theses.
Research can be done in either the US or China or both.

How to Apply:
Consult with the director of the China Center to determine if and how the research will receive assistance from the China Center.
Develop a proposal in consultation with one or more VU faculty members. A faculty member must serve as advisor.
Complete and submit the application (available from the director of the China Center).
Application requires signatures of applicant, project faculty advisor, and academic advisor.
Apply early to secure funding. Applications are reviewed in a rolling process.

Selection Process:
Selection will be made based on
Merit of the proposed research project;
Feasibility of the proposed research project;
Demonstrated ability to complete the proposed research on time and according to plan.

Help Available in China:
A local coordinator in Hangzhou will provide logistical support.

Language Help:
Two one-month, intensive Chinese language classes will be offered in April and November. The focus of these evening, not-for-credit classes will be to train students for basic level verbal communication.

Links with Chinese college students to serve as guides may be possible.
