Study in China this Summer. Get VU credit.

Valparaiso University China Center (China Center) is pleased to announce that it will offer two summer courses in Hangzhou, China in summer 2003. Class enrollment is limited. Interested students should register as soon as possible.

Courses: The two courses offered in summer 2003 are BIO 120/290, Society and Bioscience (Professor David Scupham) and FIN 282/390 Personal Finance (Professor Zhenhu Jin). Both courses will use China as a case study to help illustrate the broad themes in respective disciplines. Class enrollment is limited to 20 students per class. There will also be a non-credit course on Chinese history and language taught by a local Chinese faculty person. Opportunities for short-term internship are available upon request.

Time and Schedule: Summer courses in China coincide with summer session I. Students will leave for Shanghai on May 19 and return to Chicago on June 27, 2003. The program includes several preparation sessions prior to departure, an on-site orientation, and a three-day tour of Beijing at the beginning of the trip, four weeks of classes, weekly field trips, and opportunities for short trips by students themselves.

Cost: Participants will pay regular summer session tuition (one can choose to take both courses), international travel (a round-trip ticket between Chicago and Shanghai normally costs between $700.00 and $800.00), and China Center fee ($150.00) which is used to cover the trip to Beijing and the visa fee ($30.00). Local accommodations including room and board, local transportation, and all field trips are covered by the China Center.

Registration: To register, obtain an application from Professor Zhimin Lin (Huegli Hall 330). Approval from Prof. Lin is required to register for these summer courses. The deadline for registration is March 25 or whenever the class is full. Please register early! Courses are open to all VU and non-VU students who are eligible to undertake regular summer courses at VU.

Withdrawal: Request to withdraw from the registered summer courses in China must be made by April 30. Unless for medical reasons, withdrawal from the program after May 1 carries a penalty of $100.00. Regular penalties in terms of tuition also apply if one withdraws from the program after May 1, 2003.

International travel: Students are responsible for purchasing the plane tickets directly from the designated travel agent (Ms. Christine Chang, telephone: (614) 850-8289). To insure the low fare tickets, please purchase the tickets as soon as possible. Registered students must make full payment of the required fees to VU’s Financial Office and submit a valid passport, two photos, and a completed visa application form to the China Center by April 15.

Living in Hangzhou: Professor Jin will serve as resident director of the Program. Students will live in an air-conditioned dormitory (single or double room) at the Yuquan campus of Zhejiang University (ZU). Most meals will be Chinese style, though access to Western style food is easy. Students have access to broadband internet connection, computers and other facilities through VU’s Education Center at ZU.

Language Preparation: There is no language requirement. However, an intensive Chinese language course will be available between Mid-March to early May. Registered students are strongly encouraged to take such a course (not for credit; fee is $30.00 per participant). The China Center maintains an office at Zhejiang University that also provides computer and internet access to the participants.

Course Descriptions: BIO 120/290, Society and Bioscience, studies modern bioscience and its impact on society. FIN 282/390, Personal Finance, provides an overview of personal and family financial management such as budgets, tax management, credit management, investment and insurance selection.
