Study in China this Summer. Get VU credit.
Valparaiso University's China Center is pleased
to announce that it will offer two summer courses and three internship
programs in China in summer 2007. The two courses are open to
all majors. The internship programs are open to business/communication/ICP
majors only (other majors need special approval). Students who
are interested in the program should complete and return the pre-registration
application form to Prof. Lin ASAP as enrollment is limited
to 20. The deadline to apply is 12/10/2006.
Course Offerings (students can take one or both of the courses):
The two courses are:
- ENGL390/CC300/EAST390/HIST390/POLS490, Modern China through
Literature and Film, Cr. 3, Prof. Juneja (English and Provost
Office). May be used to fulfill the fine arts and diversity component
of the general education requirement.
- MGT390/EAST390/SOC390/ICP690, Perceptions of Business: Portrayals
in Film and Literature, Fact or Fiction? Cr. 3, Prof. Pirie (Business
Administration). May be used to fulfill the global diversity component
of the general education requirement. Count as an upper division
business elective. Students must have junior standing. Sociology
majors must have taken SOC101.
The three internship programs (all internships are located in
Hangzhou) are:
- COMM 386, Supervised Internship, Cr. 3.
- MGT 395/397/398, Internship in Business Administration I, II
& III, Cr. 0.5-2*
- ICP686, ICP internship, Cr.3. Priority given to ICP/JD candidates
Time and Schedule: Participants will leave for Shanghai,
China on May 21, 2007 and return from Beijing to Chicago on June
27. The program will start with a two-day tour of Shanghai before
arriving at Hangzhou, the provincial capital of Zhejiang where
all the classes/internship will be held. There will be four full
weeks of classes with several group field trips. The program will
end with a three-day visit to Beijing, the capital of China before
returning to US.
Cost: All participants will be responsible for regular
VU summer tuition (based on the number of the credit hours taken),
international travel (about $1,050), meals (about $150-$250),
and a $200 study center fee to cover visa application and other
fees. The China Center will pay for the two-day trip to Shanghai,
three-day trip to Beijing, and lodging in Hangzhou (4 weeks).
Enrollment Limit: The enrollment of the 2007 Program is
limited to 20.
Application/Registration: To participate in the program,
students must first complete a pre-registration
form. The form can also be downloaded from the announcement
section of CJSP website: www.valpo.edu/cjsp. Prof. Lin will start
interviewing interested applicants in late October. The deadline
to apply is December 10, 2006, but acceptance will be on a first-come,
first-serve basis. The formal registration will be completed during
the spring semester. ICP students will also need to receive approval
from the Dean of Graduate Division.

* Open to business majors with junior standing. MGT395 must be
taken along with at least one of the regular courses. MGT397/398
