Cutting Edge Facilities

Schnabel is home to the Department of Communication; the campus radio station, WVUR; the student newspaper, the Torch; and the campus yearbook, the Beacon.  It houses an industry-quality, 3-camera digital teleproduction studio with teleprompters, a 13 workstation non-linear (digital) video/audio lab, and a digital sound editing suite. The editing facilities facilitate complex student video and audio productions. Just opened is a 3-camera weather studio to support student weathercasting.  The department is an Accuweather client, and receives their data feeds and weather graphics via satellite through an advanced graphics workstation.  Communication has strong program linkages with Valpo's Geography/Meteorology department.

WVUR

The 36-watt campus radio station, WVUR, houses state-of-the-art production and Internet streamcasting facilities. WVUR is entirely student run. It has very active news and sports divisions, and broadcasts a wide range of music genres. Students positions are eagerly sought and competitive.

The Torch

The weekly campus newspaper, the Torch, is entirely student-run. News, editing, layout, editorial/opinion, and sports reporting positions are several of the areas attracting a wide range of students. The Torch has excellent desktop publishing facilities for layout.

The Beacon

The campus yearbook is also entirely student run and incoporates digital photography with desktop publishing.

This room houses the department's 13-workstation nonlinear (digital) video and audio editing lab.

This PC lab is home to the Kallay Geographic Information Systems Lab and also functions as a lab for a variety of Communication courses, including news writing.

Offices

Communication faculty offices are the primary contact points between majors and faculty.

These areas are scheduled for conversion to additional department and WVUR uses when the Center for Library and Information Resources opens fall '04..
