CIVU Held Chinese New Year Celebration
On the occasion of the coming Chinese New Year-Spring Festival, the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University (CIVU), the Chinese & Japanese Studies Program (CJS), and the Valparaiso University Chinese Student and Scholar Association (CSSA) hosted the 12th Chinese New Year Celebration on February 7, 2011. More than 400 Chinese students, VU faculty, CIVU members, and local citizens in Valparaiso attended the celebration. At the invitation of the CIVU, Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT), which is the sister university of VU, also sent two music teachers to perform at the Celebration and tour area schools afterwards to demonstrate vocal and instrumental Chinese music from February 8 to February 15.
The party began with a story of the Year of the Rabbit presented by Dr. LIU Jiangang, Associate Director of the CIVU, and Professor Benjamin Ridgway, Chinese teacher of the CJS. Wonderful folk music and Yangqin solo, beautiful exotic dances, an interesting skit by MACS students, a poem recitation and jubilant pop songs---the colorful and interesting activities in the party attracted the attention of all the guests present. The performers from China and the U.S. performed on the same stage and illustrated the same theme: harmony and peace. The Chinese song “The Moon Represents My Heart” sung by an American blind girl, Emmie Lo, highlighted the event. Her articulate pronunciation, excellent performance won loud applause from the audience; everyone could not help being moved by her perseverance. The celebration concluded with the soprano song “Unforgettable Tonight” sung by the visiting music professor ZHANG Zheng from China.
Conducted by Dr. Zhimin Lin, Chair of the CJS, the annual traditional episode of the Chinese New Year Celebration---Slide Show presented the highlights of the passing 2010 and reminded everyone of the happy memories of each Chinese student and CJS member in VU; it showcased the CIVU’s efforts in introducing the Chinese language and culture in the Valpo area.
