Construction to impact campus

Several construction projects are in place to expand resources throughout campus. These projects include new construction, restoration and renovation, and demolitions, all designed to improve campus facilities, playing a central role in the University’s efforts to grow to 6,000 students as part of the University’s Strategic Plan.

Duesenberg Welcome Center 


  • April 28 – Official ground breaking
  • Week of May 21 – Actual work on the site began
  • Projected to end May-June 2013
  • 15,000-square-foot Welcome Center will create a front door for the University and will support the needs of prospective students, alumni, and all guests visiting the campus
  • Supported by $5 million gift from Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg

Chapel of the Resurrection  

  • Week of May 21 – Nave window replacement work began
  • Projected to be completed in early August 2012
  • Closed for the summer for several restoration projects
    • Replacement of clear nave windows
    • Replacement of piping to accommodate upgrades to heating and ventilation system
    • Cleaning and repair of Chapel organs
    • Summer worship taking place 8:30 a.m. Sunday mornings in the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts, Room 1519 (Bauer Hall)
    • $15 million gift from the Rev. Mark and Kathy Helge is supporting the preservation and addition project

James S. Markiewicz Solar Research Facility

  • The 2,000-square-foot research facility, adjacent to the Gellersen Center, is the only solar furnace located at a U.S. undergraduate institution  
  • Since 2000, students have been working on the design and building process
  • Two senior design teams are working on the project, with one team focusing on the solar furnace reactor platform and the other team designing the solar flux instrument 
  • In addition to design teams, over 40 past and present students have helped in the building of the solar research facility

  • Early June – Demolition begins
  • Projected completion early August 2012

  • Week of May 21 – Restroom renovation began

Meier Hall

  • Renovation of classrooms and faculty offices taking place summer 2012
  • New home to Department of Education

COMPLETED

Arts and Sciences Building 

  • Construction began October 2010
  • Located at the site of the previous Union building, adjacent to the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources
  • The three-story, 52,000-square-foot building adds classroom space and consolidates faculty offices in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Faculty finished moving their offices from Huegli to the Arts and Sciences Building at the end of the spring 2012 semester

Donald V. Fites Engineering Innovation Center Flickr

  • Dedicated Oct. 29, 2011
  • The nearly $13 million project is an addition to the south of the Gellersen Engineering and Mathematics Center, which covers 13,470 square feet and is made up primarily of laboratory and learning space for undergraduate engineering students
  • Project also included renovation of about 4,300 square feet of existing laboratory facilities
