Demolition of the previous Union building, located west of the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, began in early July to make way for a new academic building that will advance the University’s strategic priorities.
With demolition now complete, the site will be loosely graded, and the fence will remain in place in anticipation of construction starting on the new yet-to-be-named building in late October or early November.
Work on Valpo’s new Donald V. Fites Engineering Innovation Center project continues on the south side of Gellersen Center. Members of the campus community may be affected by this project and are encouraged to be prepared.
Temporary construction trailers are set up in parking lot 2. Contractors will park in that area, and the temporary fence around the construction parking area will increase and decrease in size during the course of the project, depending on the number of workers on site. If necessary, additional parking for construction workers will be made available across Sturdy Road.
During the fall, we can expect to see the concrete floors being poured and the exterior enclosure being installed. The goal of the project is to have external construction completed before winter, and then construction will continue inside the structure through the summer of 2011 so that the building will be available for use at the start of the fall 2011 semester.
Throughout the fall, the campus community will see heavy truck traffic around the southeast side of campus and an increase in noise and dust. Flaggers will be on site to help control traffic and increase safety.
