Moving Forward with the Common Core State Standards (5-12)

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:  Dr. Donna Ogle, National-Louis University

THEME:  The Promises and Challenges of the CCSS (5-12)

The third annual PLC Workshop is sponsored by Valparaiso University's secondary level Professional Educators Partnership (PEP).  Keynote speaker, Dr. Donna Ogle has worked extentively with the development of the Common Core State Standards and what it means for schools' curriculum. Donna's areas of work include content literacy and school-based professional development.  She is past president of the International Reading Association (IRA) and is an elected member of the Reading Hall of Fame.  Her most recent publications include Partnering for Content Literacy: PRC2 in Action (2010), Building Literacy in Social Studies (2007), Engaging in the Language Arts (2009), Coming Together as Readers (2009, second edition) and All Children Read (in third edition, 2010) .

Dr. Donna Ogle's keynote, The Promises and Challenges of the CCSS, will address how the CCSS are designed to streamline instruction in English language arts and mathematics and improve literacy in history/social studies, science and technical subjects.  The CCSS require significant changes to the curriculum and the instructional focus in the classroom.  

    Why are these changes important to Indiana secondary schools?

    What are the major shifts that we need to make in the curriculum?

    What effect will these changes have on instruction and assessment of student learning?

    How will this refocusing impact the day to day planning of classroom instruction?   

Dr. Ogle will explore thae purposes for the new standards, the promises in the new standards and also highlight major challenges these pose for schools. 

Dr. Schauna Findlay, former IDOE Curriculum Director, will respond to Dr. Ogle's keynote and explore actions teachers can take now to begin reaching the goals of the CCSS.   Identify examples of how the CCSS are different from the previous Indiana State Standards. 


Morning and afternoon breakout sessions will be offered to address more content specific details of how to implement the major shift changes of the CCSS.
