Green design explored in talk
4-25-08
Two experts in the design of environmentally-friendly buildings and business
activities will discuss the benefits of “green” engineering during an
April 30 talk at Valparaiso University.
Valparaiso alumnus John Abrecht, senior architect and director of sustainable
design at Knight Engineering & Architecture, and Tim Carey, a chemical
engineer at Quaker Oats, will present “Sustainable Design Engineering.”
The talk begins at 4 p.m. in Neils Science Center and is free and open
to the public. Refreshments will be served prior to the lecture.
Abrecht and Carey will discuss current practices and predicted trends
in the sustainable design of buildings and processes during their talk.
Before joining Chicago-based Knight, Abrecht held a number of positions
with the city of Chicago over 27 years, including assistant commissioner
for its Department of General Services and project manager in its Department
of Transportation. He is a leading expert in green building design and
has been instrumental in establishing Chicago as one of the greenest cities
in the country.
Carey has extensive experience in managing a wide range of environmentally
sustainable projects for Quaker Oats.
The talk is part of a year-long series of Interdisciplinary Science Colloquia
sponsored by the University's academic departments representing the STEM
(science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines.
