ENGL-200:LITERARY STUDIES--ALIENS TO ANDROIDS: A SURVEY OF CONTEMPORARY SCIENCE FICTION LITERATURE

Prof Johnson

The academic community does not often view science fiction writing as “serious literature.” While it’s true that much science fiction writing tends toward the formulaic and is considered “genre fiction” published by specialty presses, there are plenty of science fiction books of high literary quality being published by presses that appeal to a more general and literary audience. This course focuses on the high-quality science fiction writing of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and will primarily consider fiction writing, with some poetry and film.

Authors include Margaret Atwood, Orson Scott Card, Audrey Niffenegger, and Bryan Dietrich, among others.
