English 441/541: History of the English Language

Cr. 3

Uehling:

In this course students will trace the major historical and social influences on the language. Particular emphasis will fall on the development of new regional vocabulary (e.g., Australian, American) and on the formation of words and on issues of usage such as gender bias and correctness. Classes will depend more on discussion than on lecture. Students will be responsible for oral reports which provide supplementary background information, critical examinations, and a comprehensive final exam.
