English 470/570: Twentieth-Century Fiction

Cr. 3

In this course we will read and discuss significant works of fiction by both British and American writers published since around the turn of the (last) century. A typical reading list for the course might include such writers as Henry James, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, William Faulkner, as well as a selection of more contemporary writers. Emphasis will be placed on the assigned readings, but we will also be concerned with important social, political, historical, and psychological issues reflected in the writing of the modern and post-modern period. A mid-term examination and a final are required along with occasional quizzes and four or five analytical or interpretive papers.
