English 475/575: Twentieth Century Poetry

Students in this course will examine poets in the modern and postmodern periods of the twentieth century, as well as investigate the influential thematic and stylistic innovations that advanced new directions in poetry throughout those periods. Readings may include selections from Yeats, Eliot, Williams, Stevens, Lowell, Plath, Warren, Bishop, Ginsberg, and a number of others. Requirements for the course will include a midterm exam, a final exam, a brief book review, an extended analytical term paper focused on a single author or literary movement, and regular participation on the class discussion board.
