This course surveys the field of adolescent literature as a genre that is related to, but distinct from, children's literature. The course features about a dozen adolescent novels, ranging from 1949 (The Catcher in the Rye) to the present moment. There is an emphasis on very recent works so that students who are preparing to teach middle school or high school English can get a feel for what their students might currently be reading. Authors for the course may include J.D. Salinger, Walter Dean Myers, Laurie Halse Anderson, An Na, Adam Bagdasarian, Sarah Dessen, Daniel Keyes, Robert Cormier and others. There will be a midterm and final exam. Assignments include a shorter paper (4-5 pages) and an author presentation and paper.
