Biography

Jennifer Lynn Miller has returned to Valparaiso University from the University of Minnesota, where she earned her PhD in English, focusing her studies on multicultural American literature and science fiction/fantasy literature.

As an undergraduate, Prof. Miller received her BA in English and German from Valparaiso University, earning distinction as both a Christ College scholar and as an English scholar with honors.

Prof. Miller is a postdoctoral fellow for 2010-2012 in the Lilly Fellows Program, for which she teaches courses in the College of Arts and Sciences and Christ College.

In her current book project, Miller examines the function of the fantastic in Native American, Asian American, and fantasy literature.  She argues that the uncertainty inherent in the fantastic provides a way to complicate portrayals of race and identity in many of these popular works of fiction.  As a Lilly Fellow, Miller looks forward to the opportunity to expand this research to examine the relationship between faith and the fantastic in both fantasy literature and religious writings.

Miller is also the editor-in-chief of Fantasy Matters, a website dedicated to providing a bridge between academic and popular conversations about fantasy and science fiction.
