Through our programs in literary studies and writing, we offer an education in humane letters based on the principles of writing and the literary traditions of English in Great Britain, the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
Our offerings include a major and a minor in literary studies and a major and a minor in writing with tracks in either creative or professional writing. We also offer a Master of Arts in English Studies and Communication, a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and courses that fulfill requirements for the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree, with or without a concentration in English.

The anthology Poetry from Paradise
Valley, which includes poems from the first ten
years of Valparaiso Poetry Review, has been named by judges for the
Indiana State Library as one of three finalists for the annual "Best
Books of Indiana" award.
The book of verse Seeded Light (2010) by Professor Edward Byrne was
chosen as another among the three finalists.

The English Department welcomes Professor Katherine Calloway, who
comes from University of British Columbia as a Lilly Fellow in
Humanities and the Arts.
Prof. Calloway specializes in the poetry and natural theology of seventeenth-century England.
