What is
distinctive about Valpo's program?
Valpo Environmental Science Majors gain a scientific
background that prepares them for hands-on fieldwork assessing
environmental systems that lead to careers in the management and
protection of the environment.
- Location, location, location: Valpo's proximity
to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore allows for frequent examination
of one of the most ecologically interesting field sites in the nation.
In addition, a long history of industrial production provides excellent
case studies of environmental problems and creative solutions.
- Faculty: Valpo's Enviromental Science program is
greatly enhanced by the participation of faculty from a variety of
strong departments on campus. These include a chemistry program fully
accredited by the American Chemical Society, a Geography Department
known for its specialities in meteorological science and Native
American issues, and Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering.
- VU Graduate Programs: At Valpo you have the
opportunity of continuing your undergraduate interest in Environmental
Science by pursuing the College of
Business Administration's Master of Business Administration degree
or by pursuing a degree in law from the Valparaiso University School of Law.
Valpo's MBA program emphasizes skills needed for successful leadership
in today's dynamic world. These include interpersonal communication,
functional excellence, ethical and critical thinking, technology
management, and stewardship of the natural environment. Valpo's School
of Law has faculty with an interest in environmental law.

a Job in this Field:
Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science (or,
depending upon specific field of concentration, Bachelor of Science
degree in Biology or Chemistry).
Kinds of Work Available to Graduates in this Major:
An ever-expanding range of career choices is open to
Environmental Science majors at the B.S. level. Many Environmental
Science majors will go on for advanced training in graduate or
professional schools.
Potential Hiring Institutions:
Local, state and federal government agencies, manufacturing
firms, legal firms (environmental law), utility companies and
industries, non-profit organizations, waste and toxic disposal
companies, environmental restoration companies, environmental
consulting firms.

Valpo offer in this field?
Area Resources
Many of the courses in this major include off-campus field trips to
places like
Indiana Dunes State Park, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Chicago
museums, and
local parks and gardens. One course even includes an overnight camping
trip into
southern Michigan.
Extracurricular Activities
Among the more than 100 clubs and organizations at Valpo is the
EarthTones, which promotes a variety of environmental activities,
including recycling and composting on campus and service to the
Northwest Indiana community. Also, the Biology Club is active in stream
habitat restoration.
Independent Research and Internship Opportunities
Environmental Science students are prepared for their professional
experience by taking part in an internship or Co-op program, or
carrying out independent scientific research project of environmental
merit with the help and guidance of a Ph.D.-level faculty mentor.
Study Abroad
Students may take advantage of Valpo's 14 study abroad programs in
countries such as Mexico, England, Spain, France, Germany, Greece,
Namibia, China, and Japan as well as in programs in New York, Chicago,
and Washington, D.C. Environmental internships are available through
several of these programs.
