New Information for 2010 NWISEF
A new category has been added for both senior and junior divisions in the Northwestern Indiana Science and Engineering Fair for 2010!  This new category is in Aviation Sciences and prizes will be a $100.00 series EE savings bond  for the top project in each division sponsored by the Porter County Pilots Association.

Who can participate?

Students from all schools in Porter, LaPorte, and Starke counties are eligible to participate in the Northwestern Indiana Science and Engineering Fair.   Home-schooled students are welcome to participate as well.

Are team projects allowed?

Yes, team projects are allowed! Team projects may consist of two to three students.  Team projects in the senior division will compete against other teams only.  Team projects  in the junior division will compete against all junior projects.

How are the projects judged?

Projects are judged based on the following criteria:
Creative Ability, Scientific Thought, Thoroughness, Skill, and Clarity.
Judges use a scoring system with a total of 100 points possible for each project.  The highest concentration of points is based on Creative Ability and Scientific Thought.  A minimum of three judges will review each project during the two-hour judging session.

What will Fair Day be like?

First of all, projects are to be set up on Friday, March 19, 2010 from 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Harre Union Ballroom at Valparaiso University.
Then, on Fair Day, students need to arrive by 9:30 a.m. and be present at their projects ready to be judged at 10:00 a.m. sharp.
After judging is finished, students will receive lunch free of charge at 12:00 Noon.
From Noon to 3:30 p.m., students, family members and friends can relax, take a campus tour, visit the Brauer Art Museum, or enjoy all the City of Valparaiso has to offer. 
**The awards ceremony begins promptly at 3:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Harre Union.

What happens after the Regional Fair?

The top two senior division (high school) winners, the senior division runner-up, the top two junior division (middle school) winners, and the team project winner from the senior division will receive trips to the Hoosier State Science and Engineering Fair taking place on March 27, 2010 at IUPUI in Indianapolis sponsored by the Science Education Foundation of Indiana (SEFI).

The team project winner must compete at the Hoosier Fair to win the honor of representing the State of Indiana at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Only one team project will win this honor!  The two senior division winners and their faculty sponsors automatically receive all-expenses-paid trips to the ISEF.  Sponsored by Intel, the ISEF will be held in San Jose, CA this year from May 9-15, 2010.

Important Project Information!


Registration forms with abstracts are due no later than February 26, 2010.  Additional forms for senior projects are also due by this date and can be mailed or faxed along with registration fees or dropped off in person. 

Registration fees of $10 per project are due by Friday, March 19, 2010.  If mailing, please send all information and fees to Laura Spickard, 1409 Chapel Dr. Huegli Hall, Rm. 27, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
