A summary of campus construction activities prepared by the Office of Facilities Management.

Union

Next week workers will begin preparing for installation of windows on the west side of the building. Installation of the windows is likely to take several weeks with the large custom-made windows for the rounded areas of the building likely among the last installed. If temperatures drop significantly before window installation is complete, temporary coverings will be used to “weather proof” the building so interior work can continue throughout the winter.

Also scheduled during the next two weeks are pouring of concrete for the loading dock ramp on the north side of the building, continued laying of brick (east and south sides) and limestone (northeast and southeast corners) and ongoing roof work on the southwest and southeast corners of the building.

Inside the structure, placement of conduit for electrical services continues along with installation of ventilation system ductwork and plumbing, including portions of the fire protection system. Workers are beginning to pull electrical cable through conduit in some areas.

Voice and Data Transmission

The benefits from all the digging on campus last spring are closer to being fully realized. Installation of fiber optic and telephone cables throughout campus is complete and buildings are being connected to the new delivery networks. Although work continues in a few buildings, most are now connected to the new system that provides 10 times the bandwidth in the central campus core and dramatically increases the connection speed at each building. Among buildings where fiber optic connections remain to be completed are Kretzmann, Center for the Arts, Lankenau, Scheele, Huegli, Wesemann and Henrichs House. Telephone system work remains at Loke Hall, the Athletics-Recreation Center and the Police Department.

Parking Ramp

As announced earlier, the elevator is in operation. Minor work remains in both stairwells and signage and additional lighting will be installed soon. The parking ramp is fully functional and is getting increased use from members of the campus community who have valid identification cards.
