Facilities Management is in charge of storm water management on campus.
The EPA has a focus on decreasing and controlling storm water run off. Some of the issues are:
- Reduce flooding of the underground system
- Reduce water running across the surface into streets, parking, and walks
- Reduce contaminants into the water stream
- Annual cleaning of catch basins
Remedies have included:
- Storm water retention/detention structures
- Oversized catch basins
- Oversized tiles
- Increased plantings
- Surface drain roofs that drain onto grass
- Underground water storage structures
Regulations include:
- Testing of outflow waters
- Mapping of water flows
- Permits for outflows and volumes
The regulations are administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). Valparaiso University is a co-applicant with the city of Valparaiso.
