Marketing and Communications Intern

The Marketing & Communications Intern – Dining Services will work daily with a team under the direction of the Assistant Director of Dining Services in the implementation of marketing and communications strategies for Valparaiso University Dining Services.


As the ideal candidate, one must be a creative and motivated individual that’s eager to learn about lifestyle marketing from both a strategic and tactical perspective. The candidate must have the ability to work unsupervised and have a natural interest in marketing and communications. The candidate must have the ability to work under tight deadlines, communicate ideas and actions, and partner with other campus units.


Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Research: Report on trends, popular culture and niche movements and happenings
  • Graphic Design: Prepare banners, brochures, ppt., posters, templates and email blasts
  • Web: Maintain and enhance website, assist in the production of graphics, assist with social network marketing
  • Meal Plans: Assists in awareness of meal plans and help to drive meal plan sales
  • Database Management: Assist with importing, managing and tracking core target segments
  • Reporting: Assist with marketing and communications reports as needed
  • Events: Assist with event planning and hosting for the events
  • Miscellaneous: participate in some creative brainstorm sessions with management and student panels

Additional projects will include:

  • Social Media campaigns and measurement
  • Measure effectiveness of campaigns
  • Tracking and measurement of student sentiment towards Dining Services
  • Photography of special events
  • Monthly product promotions and review of results
  • Off-campus and on-campus meal plan promotions
  • Website and Mobile application updating
  • Writing and proofing copy for communications
  • Email Design (layout, coding, and content)




This student must be outgoing and team oriented.  They must possess excellent writing and verbal skills, and be willing to look at marketing and communications with a fresh, new perspective.  Other required skills include a working knowledge of MS Office applications, social media sites/dashboards, and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, InDesign and Photoshop) or similar software.
