German Etymologies: Lesson Six

Lesson 6: Etymological Dictionaries
Once you start to recognize correspondences between German and English words, you may find that you occasionally want either 1) an authority to back up your guess or 2) more information about a certain word or group of words.

I have written a simple Etymological Dictionary to be used in conjunction with this tutorial. If you want a simple, English explanation of the etymology of a word that is commonly taught in the first year of German instruction, look here. If you are ready to plunge into something a little more complex, try the following dictionary:

Duden Etymologie: Das Herkunftswörterbuch. 2nd ed. Vol. 7. Mannheim: Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG, 1989.
