Lesson Plan: Story-Based Grammar-"Novemberstimmung" (50 minutes)

1) Warm-up: Assoziogramme zeichnen (10-15 minutes)
· Have the students work together in groups of 4 or 5-either at their desks with pen and paper or at the board-to make associative webs in German on the topic of "Weihnachten."
Example:

· Have students share information from their associative webs with the class.

2) Work with the poem (15-20 minutes)
· Pre-teach the new vocabulary with a glossary, TPR, a matching worksheet, or by drawing pictures on the board: der Ast, ragen, schmücken, vorbereiten, spüren, unterscheiden, wecken, die Erinnerung, die Saite, das Schwingen.
· Read the poem aloud to the students, once or twice.
· Give the students 5 minutes to go through the poem with a partner, underlining all of the things that have to do with Christmas. Then lead a brief whole-class discussion in which the students share their findings.
· Have the students, working with their partners, match summary sentences to the four strophes of the poem:
Es ist Herbst.
Es gibt Weihnachtslichter in den Bäumen.
Traditionelle Aktivitäten werden gemacht.
Ich bin anders als ihr, weil die Weihnachtstraditionen für mich keine Bedeutung haben.
· Check the activity by having students read the sentences in order

3) Story-Based Grammar (15-25 minutes)
· Write two (modified) sentences from the poem on the board or overhead:
Die Äste ragen in den grauen Himmel.
Die Tradition wird lebendig.
· Ask the students to consider (in groups or individually, for 2-3 minutes) why the adjective in the first sentence has an ending and why the adjective in the second sentence does not. Discuss the phenomenon with the group; explain attributive and predicate adjectives.
· Present the basics of adjective endings.
· Have the students go through the poem, adding 5-6 adjectives to the poem with the proper adjective endings.
