CLASSES TEACHERS LESSONS HOME

Languages offered at VCS schools:

French, German, and Spanish are offered at Flint Lake and Hayes Leonard Elementary schools. The number of "sections" (individual classes) will be based on student registration numbers.
Grade level: Students in grades four and five may participate.
Day and time: All classes are held on Mondays after school from 3:30 until 4:30 pm.
Student fee: The student fee is $50 for the entire year to be paid at time of application. The fee will be used to pay the Valparaiso University tutors for their services and to cover the cost of supplies. This fee is non-refundable after the classes begin.
Class size: A minimum of 12 students is required to form a class with a maximum of 18 students.
Transportation: There is no transportation offered as part of this program. If the class is not offered at your child's home school, parents must provide transportation to and from the assigned location. Parents of children attending a class at their home school must transport their children home.
Application: Parents are to complete one application for each child enrolled. A check made out to Valparaiso Community Schools for $50 (full year) must accompany each application. The application and check should be mailed or hand delivered to the Valparaiso Community Schools Administration Building. Due to the popularity of the program, students will be registered on a first come, first serve basis.

In this class, your child will...

• learn to speak and understand words and simple phrases that talk about seasons, colors, household objects, animals, families, emotions, etc.;

• hear the "target" language a lot of the time -- we know that a child's ability to use new words and grammar is directly related to how much the child hears this information;

• watch carefully selected video segments and listen to songs that will help with language learning;

• do some very basic writing, in activites and worksheets; and

• play games that reinforce vocabulary and phrases.
