RESEARCH INTERESTS
Professor Duvick's most recent research project involves
transcribing and translating from French the business
journal of Joseph Bailly de Messein, the first non-native
American to settle in Porter County, Indiana. The
journal dates from 1799 to 1807 and paints an interesting
picture of the upper Midwest during the time of fur
trappers and voyageurs.
RECENT PRESENTATIONS, PUBLICATIONS,
AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
• Professor
Duvick serves on the national Executive Council
of the American Association of Teachers of French
as Regional Representative. She represents chapters
from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and West
Virginia. She serves as Chair of the AATF Strategic
Planning Committee.
• Professor
Duvick spoke on Indiana's French heritage at
the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers' Conference
in November, 2006. Her talk was named "Best
of Indiana" and she will present a revised
version at the Central States Conference on
the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Dearborn,
Michigan, in March 2008.
• Professor
Duvick gave a presentation on French-US Cultural
Relations at the AATF National Conference in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July 2006. She gave
a talk on voyageur history at the 2005
AATF conference in Québec City.
• In
December 2004, Professor Duvick presented a
paper on Maupassant's fiction at the Modern
Language Association meetings in Washington,
D.C.
• In 2003, Professor Duvick was named Indiana
State French Teacher of the Year--Post-Secondary
Level by the Indiana AATF Chapter and the Indiana
State Foreign Language Teachers Association.
• Professor
Duvick has spoken at a variety of community
events on the topic of French-Canadian fur trader
Joseph Bailly and his connections with Indiana
and Porter County. She has presented at the
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as well as
various area historical societies.
• Professor
Duvick's article "Sustaining Foreign Language
Enrollments through Collaboration: An Interdisciplinary
Major" was published in the Winter 2002 Bulletin of the Association of Departments
of Foreign Languages.
• In May 2002, Professor Duvick delivered a paper
entitled "Language and Social Climbing
at the Cincinnati Conference on Romance Languages
and Linguistics.
