LRC - Requirements for the English Conversation Partner Program


Program requirements


• Requirements for international student participants:

1. The international student (IS) completes the paperwork for intensifying CORE for one additional credit.  The "Petition to Intensify a Course" can be downloaded from the Registrar's website.  
2. The IS meets with the native speaker for 16 hours of one-on-one conversation throughout the semester:
8 hours before spring recess
        8 hours after spring recess, completed by the last day of class
  The IS uses TutorTrac at the beginning and end of each session so that all hours can be tracked.
3. The IS attends the introductory meeting
4. The IS attends the wrap-up/feedback meeting (Reading Day)
5. The IS writes a reflection (2-3 pages) and submits to his or her CORE instructor


• Requirements for native speaker (US) participants:

1. The native speaker (NS) registers for one GS 180 Civic Engagement credit*
2. The NS meets with the international student for 16 hours of one-on-one conversation throughout the semester:
  8 hours before spring recess
        8 hours after spring recess, completed by the last day of class
The NS uses TutorTrac at the beginning and end of each session so that all hours can be tracked.
3. The NS should spend a few minutes preparing for each conversation session by browsing resources in the LRC, deciding on a few conversation topics, etc. The NS should prepare to lead the international student at the beginning of the conversation session, knowing that conversations will naturally take their own course during the hour-long session.
4. The NS attends the introductory meeting (Thursday/Friday of the first week of class)
5. The NS attends the wrap-up/feedback meeting (Reading Day)
6. The NS writes a reflection (3 pages) and submits to the ECPP coordinator


*The GS 180 Civic Engagement credit requires 20 hours of service.  In the English Conversation Partner Program, the hours are accounted for in the following way:

16 hours of one-on-one conversation
2 hours of preparation over the course of the semester
2 hours of meetings (introductory and wrap-up/feedback meetings)
