Scholarships for First Year Students

$1,000 Scholarship for Incoming First Year Students Who Will Major in Classics, French, German or Spanish

 Deadline:  January 6, 2017

Valparaiso University announces its annual competition for $1,000 scholarships for incoming freshman students who will major in Classics, French, German, or Spanish. These merit awards are renewable three times for a total of $4,000 if the student remains a foreign language major and makes satisfactory academic progress. Scholarship winners, who may have two academic majors, are selected on the basis of this application, an essay of 200 words, a teacher's letter of recommendation, and a foreign language exam that must be taken before January 6, 2017 during the senior year in high school.  We invite you to be considered for one of these scholarships.

There are three parts of the application process:

1) APPLICATION FORM and ESSAY

Describe in about 200 words your academic and career goals. Focus on how you became interested in foreign languages and how you hope to use your language skills in the future. A successful essay will be well organized and thoughtful.  Type or print clearly.

You may submit the application form and essay through the online application form.  Or, if you prefer, you may print off the application form (PDF) and mail it along with your essay to Dr. Sarah DeMaris (see mailing address below).  You may also create a PDF of your application and essay and submit via an email message to Dr. Sarah DeMaris.

2) LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

Obtain a letter of recommendation from your high school language teacher who will then mail the letter to:

Dr. Sarah DeMaris

3) LANGUAGE EXAM

• Finally, take the on-line language exam. Even if you submit your application form by regular mail, you must take the language exam on-line by clicking on the link above.
