Master of Engineering Management


Program Description
The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program is intended to prepare graduates of accredited engineering programs with the management skills needed to provide engineering leadership in today’s multi-disciplinary business environments. The primary focus of the MEM is on management and the application of business skills to engineering leadership situations. Students will have already completed their primary technical education with their undergraduate engineering degree.

Program Requirements
This is a 36-credit program that can be completed in one calendar year by full-time students, or it can be completed in 2 to 3 years part-time.

The program's academic calendar includes four seven-week terms that closely correspond to Valparaiso University's Fall and Spring Semesters, and two six-week summer terms. Students are encouraged to apply during the Fall I and Spring I terms. The standard 2 credit course will be taught one night per week during the regular sessions and two nights per week during the summer.

Students enrolled in the Master of Engineering Management program may not register for more than 15 credits in any semester or more than 8 credits in any seven-week session without special permission from the Associate Dean and Director of the Graduate Programs in Management and the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Criteria for Admission
 For admission to the Master of Engineering Management Program students must meet the admission requirements established by the Graduate Division. In addition, the College of Business Administration requires the following:

  1. Valparaiso University Master of Engineering Management Application;
  2. Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE);
  3. A letter of application including a statement of professional goals. This letter substitutes for the general essay noted under Admission for Degree-Seeking Students;
  4. Transcript showing completion of an ABET-accredited engineering degree;
  5. For non-native English-speaking students, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Exceptions to these requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Students planning to enroll in graduate management programs should consult with the Dean Schroeder, Associate Dean and Director of the Graduate Programs in Management.

Financial Considerations
 Students may be surprised to discover the affordable tuition rate at Valparaiso University. Tuition for the Master of Engineering Management Program for the 2008-2009 academic year is $590 per credit hour, highly competitive for a private institution of recognized national quality. Students enrolled in graduate courses pay a $80 general fee each semester. Financial aid is available through direct and indirect student loans for students taking 6 credits or more during fall and spring semesters.
