Reading to be done before Class: ESBS Chapter 412-329
Come to class with a basic familiarity with the following concepts and ideas: watersheds, groundwater, aquifers, wetlands, marshes, swamps, bogs, water table, confined aquifer (artesian), unconfined aquifer, consumptive use, non-consumptive use, dams, flood control, water diversion, groundwater depletion, desalinization.

Water Resources: Watersheds, Groundwater, Wetlands, and the Aral Sea

Watersheds

  • Ecosystem Distributions and Watersheds
  • Watersheds and Bioregionalism
  • Our own watershed
  • Importance of watersheds for managing water resources
  • Example--The Gila Basin in Arizona
Groundwater
  • Aquifers
  • Safe aquifer yield
  • Saltwater intrusion

Wetlands

The Aral Sea
  • The Problem
  • Consequences
    • Bottom Exposure and Salt/Dust Storms.
    • Loss of Aquatic Productivity
    • Climatic Change
    • Loss of Groundwater
    • Pollution of Water Supplies
    • Economic damage
