The Conservation Movement

Includes tons of pictures and the full text of many important documents including George Perkins Marsh's Man and Nature. There's even some video here--including the film The Roosevelt Dam which is worth a viewing.

North American Amphibian Monitoring program includes an Indiana web site that has a handy guide to identifying frogs and toads in the state complete with recordings of their calls. Useful for identifying the frog calls that you hear as you roam around the dunes, and around town, in the spring.

4/2/05 Hey there everyone. On that warm day last week, I think it was wednesday, I heard the frogs singing in the ponds near my house for the first time this spring. In today's paper there is an article about a volunteer for the Volunteers record species present by listening for their distinctive calls. Frogs are particularly vulnerable to environmental degradation and therefore can serve as a barometer for enviornmental health. The Indiana web site for the program has a They also provide a protocol that you could use to try doing your own survey. You might try your hand at some frog identification for an outdoor experience.

The cable channels are driven by the profit motive so you're more likely to get stories about megafauna and people redecorating, but there are also some good programs out there.

Mythbusters If you think you don't like science just watch this show once.
Blue Planet
The Science Channel Just the science--no home decorating.
Animal Planet I don't tend to watch this channel, but my neice and nephew love it.
Natioanl Geographic Channel Sometimes it even broadcasts actual programs about geography.
