Culture and Identity Assignment

For this assignment you will write a reflection paper on social issues and issues of class, race, gender, sexuality, etc. in the place you have chosen in relation to the readings from the course.

Additional Notes

  • In class we have discussed age (young and old people), poverty and class, alternative rural lifestyles, gender, sexualaity, race and ethnicity. Comment on any or all of these as they affect your place. You may use the demographic information from previous assignments as a starting point for thinking about what issues are going to be important.
  • You might focus on the myths and realities of identities for your place. To what extent does census data either confirm or contradict dominant ideas about the place you have chosen.
  • If you lack sufficient information to comment on these issues for the locality you chose, you can also reflect more generally about culture and identity in relation to rural areas based on our recent readings.
  • The activity of imagining a "progressive" rural identity is suggested as one of the course goals. You might comment on what this might look like in general or in the specific case of your study region.
  • Your paper should be three to five pages long.
  • Your paper should follow the standards for writen work for the course.
