The Fall of the Berlin Wall: A Commemoration

Follow the time-line that shows events from 1945, when World War II ended to 1961, when the wall was built, to 1989.  New events are added to the time-line in "real time" but 20 years after that historic fall of 1989.

BERLIN WALL FILM FESTIVAL
Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Wall: the Making and the Breaking of the Berlin Wall.   
1995.  Color and b/w.  50 minutes.  (In English.)       
A British television documentary with historic footage from 1945 to 1990 that explains the Berlin wall's place in history.

Der geteilte Himmel (The Divided Heaven)
Director: Konrad Wolf, 1964.  B/W.  115 minutes.
Based on Christa Wolf's famous novel, this East German film describes the romance between a young engineer and a student.  Each must decide whether to go west for economic opportunity or to remain in the east to participate in the new social and economic order.

Das Versprechen (The Promise)
Director: Margarethe von Trotta, 1995.  Color.  115 minutes.  R.
Konrad and Sophie plan a daring escape to Western Germany, but only Sophie makes it.  For 28 years Konrad and Sophie keep their relationship alive - Konrad is allowed some western travel in his profession - and then they meet again after the Berlin wall falls.
