DEFA (East German) Film Festival and Lecture
The state-run film studio of the German Democratic Republic was called DEFA (Deutsche Filmaktiengesellschaft). Headquartered near Berlin, DEFA produced films in nearly all genres, including 750 feature films. The DEFA Film Festival introduces four of their best-known films.

Banned for 24 years, this film was first shown in cinemas after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

(1973) 1 hour 45 minutes, color
A cult classic, this film is still the most popular film ever produced by DEFA. A story about love and the pursuit of individual freedom.

(1974) 1 hour 35 minutes, color
A moving story about a man who brings comfort to his Nazi-occupied Polish ghetto by relating fabricated news stories. (Remade in 1999 with Robin Williams.)

(1982) 1 hour 20 minutes, black and white
Considered DEFA's greatest women's film, Christine Schorn of the Deutsches Theater (Berlin) plays the lead role.
