Professor Sarah DeMaris serves as Director of the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center. A member of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures since 1982, Prof. DeMaris has served as director since the center's inception in the fall of 2000. As director of the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center, she develops and directs programming in the facility, enhances relationships with German and German-related organizations in the United States, fosters exchanges and other programs with German-speaking countries, and integrates programming in the facility with other campus programs. She continues to teach in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
Prof. DeMaris is a former resident director of the VU student center in Reutlingen, Germany. She studied one year in Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship and was subsequently awarded two Fulbright Scholarships for summer study in Germany.
She is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Germanic linguistics and later studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, Germany, before earning her Ph.D. at Princeton University with emphasis in German medieval literature. The provost of Valparaiso University, Dr. Roy Austensen, has praised Dr. DeMaris's qualifications: "Dr. DeMaris is wonderfully well suited for this role. Not only does she communicate in German at near-native levels, she is familiar with the relationships between the German and American cultures and has an ideal background for developing and managing the programs in this living and learning center."
