The Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural
Center, located near the intersection of Mound Street and Linwood
Avenue between old campus and new campus, is a relatively new building
at Valparaiso University. The $3.2 million project, funded through
the generosity of the Max Kade Foundation and alumni benefactors Richard
and Phyllis Duesenberg and Robert and Lori Duesenberg, was begun in
August 1999. The two-story, 10,200-square-foot building was designed
by a local firm, Design Organization,
in the style of the German Bauhaus movement of the 1920s and was distinguished
with Northwest Indiana's 2001 "Commercial Project of the Year"
award, as well as the 2001 Community Improvement Award given by the
Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce and the Porter County Builders
Association, Inc. A festive topping-out ceremony, the Richtfest,
marked the completion of the framework in December 1999, and the house
was completed and dedicated in September 2000. Visit our on-line galleries
of the December 6, 1999 Richtfest and of the construction of
the center for a photographic glimpse into the history of the Kade-Duesenberg
House and Cultural Center.
