For Tom ’54 and Althea (Reinhardt ’54) Schumann, establishing a charitable gift annuity was a way to help generations of students. The Schumanns met at Valparaiso University, and have been long-time contributors. “It’s important to support the place where you received your education and were prepared for the future, so it can continue to do so for students for years to come,” Tom says.

Recently, the couple decided to establish a charitable gift annuity naming Valpo as the beneficiary. “We both had such great experiences at VU in classes with our professors, and with sports and other student activities. We’ve seen a great deal of progress on campus from the support of other alumni, and we decided that now it was our turn to give back,” Althea says.

The Schumanns appreciate the benefit that comes from the annuity payments they receive each year. When they made their gift, they also received a charitable deduction on their taxes. But for them, the best part is knowing that they have been able to make a difference.

“We feel strongly that an excellent Christian university like Valpo plays an important role in the whole cultural background of our country. We’re happy if we can play a part in helping that continue,” Tom says.
