On the way to Germany!
Abby Lange

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind, but the Chorale is finally on its way to Germany! Right now! Really. I’m typing this on the bus as we’re driving to the airport, and it’s actually sinking in that in a few hours I’ll be on a cross-Atlantic flight to München (that’s Munich, for all those non-Deutsch speakers).

Through the craze and haze of finals, we didn’t have as much time to practice, so Friday and Saturday mornings were spent with Dr. Cock in rehearsal.  Gearing up for a two-week tour is a little harder than one might expect. The preparation doesn’t just involve learning notes and melodies, but also memorizing pieces (often in foreign languages!) and increasing our vocal endurance.  Often, we will have performances several days in a row, and that can be draining on our voices. However, Dr. Cock has done a great job getting us ready for 14 days of singing, and I’m confident that our performances will be strong even at the end of our time in Germany.

As I’m sure there are a few of you who are interested in the minute details of our trip, I’ll give you a quick rundown.  Our flight from O’Hare leaves at 8:50 pm, and as long as things go on schedule we’ll arrive at 12:30 pm local time. That means there will be about 45 jetlagged Valpo students wandering around Germany, which will surely be a humorous sight.  Then, Dr. Cock will display his fabulous sense of humor by holding a (most productive) rehearsal. Seriously though, it will be good for all of us to have a reherasal once we get there so that we can get adjusted to the time change as quickly as possible.

The next few days we have fewer performances and more rehearsals, so I’m excited about the free time we’ll have in Leipzig, which will be our sort of  “home base” city for the tour. It won’t take long before I start trying the local cuisine, exploring the town’s churches and museums, and finding gifts for people at home.

Almost to the airport now, so it’s time to sign off. Auf wiedersehen!
