Chorale album features Germany tour
A new album featuring highlights of the Valparaiso University Chorale's 2010 tour of Germany, a musical odyssey that included an unprecedented third residency at the famous St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, is now available for purchase.

"O My Soul" contains nearly an hour of music, from classical masterpieces by Handel and Haydn to traditional American folk songs and spirituals, performed by Valpo's premier choral ensemble during its two-week tour of Germany. Stories, videos and photographs documenting the tour are online at www.valpo.edu/globalvalpo/germany2010.

Chorale conductor Christopher Cock, Duesenberg professor of Lutheran church music, said the tour led the choir from concerts and services in historic cathedral spaces in Leipzig to a church dedication in the remote countryside of the former East Germany.

"This new album captures a unique energy that comes from performing in places such as St. Thomas Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach composed music for nearly 30 years, and a small German town whose people finally realized their dream of building a church after more than 60 years," Cock said. "The Chorale tour was a powerful experience for our students to share a spirit of friendship and build relationships with the people of Germany through song."

In reviews of tour concerts published by two German newspapers, the Scharzwälder Bote and the Schwäbisches Tagblatt, critics praised the Chorale for its "masterful" performances that were "heavenly and virtuosic."

Songs on the album include Handel's coronation anthem "Let thy Hand be Strengthened" for King George II and Queen Caroline, Samuel Barber's setting of Gaelic poetry "Reincarnations," James Erb's classic setting of the American folk song "Shenandoah," Billy Joel's "Lullabye," Robert DeCormier's spiritual "Hallelujah" and Haydn's "Missa Brevis." "O My Soul" is the seventh album the Chorale has recorded under Cock's direction.

The Chorale (www.valpo.edu/music/ensembles/vu_chorale.php) is one of the world's top Lutheran collegiate choirs and has served three residencies at the St. Thomas Church, the only American collegiate choir to enjoy such an intimate relationship with the church. Dedicated to performing works that represent Valparaiso University's Lutheran heritage, the choir also is noted for its performance of significant contemporary works in their original languages and music expressing multicultural perspectives.
