Concert raises funds for international school

A venture to launch a Leipzig school that will combine the study of music and languages benefited from the Valparaiso University Chorale’s first performance in Germany, which took place May 20 at Lutherkirche.

In celebration of the 800-year anniversary of the Thomanerchor (the boys’ choir of Thomaskirche), the Forum Thomaner is working to open an international school for children up to age 18 where they will receive both musical education and learn English or Italian.

The first phase of the school, a kindergarten, was launched in 2008, and will expand to children ages 6 to 10 in August. Ahrendt Rolf, managing director of the Forum Thomaner, said the initiative also aims to establish a program that will draw young musicians from many nations to refine their performance skills while building connections with their peers in other nations.

“We want to create a youth music academy to bring students from all over the world to get to know eachother and expand their musical knowledge,” Rolf said.

The support of the Chorale is appreciated, Rolf said.

“We enjoy any helping hand received as we aim to support an 800-year old tradition of musical excellence and international education,” he said. “This effort intends to link people together, and collaborating with the Valpo Chorale furthers that mission.”

Lutherkirche, an 18th century church, will be rebuilt as part of the initiative to provide a multipurpose facility for music performance and education.

The benefit concert continues Valpo’s long history of supporting global learning, and the Chorale’s own philanthropic efforts.

The Chorale raised funds to repair a historic Germany church during its 2007 tour, and during this year’s spring tour of the Midwestern United States, the choir raised $750 for Haiti earthquake relief efforts during a Feb. 28 concert at First English Lutheran Church in Richmond, Ind.
