Chorale performs in Rottenburg am Neckar

The Valparaiso University Chorale performed at historic Wallfahrtskirche Weggental in Rottenburg am Neckar on May 24 to an audience of hundreds of community members and Valpo friends. The performance was the choir's first appearance near the city of Reutlingen, where Valpo launched one of its first international study programs in 1968.

Prior to the concert, a Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) reception was hosted at Rottenburg’s Kaffeehaus Prinz Carl for 18 German students who have studied at Valpo, four students who will be studying at Valpo next year, Valpo students currently in Germany, Valpo alumni working in Germany and other friends of Valpo (including Wolf and Olga Brixners, who have taught Valpo classes at Reutlingen for 30 years, Rottenburg’s cultural director KarlHeinz Geppert, and faculty and administrators from Valpo’s partner institutions in Germany).

At the conclusion of the concert, Chorale members attended a reception at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik (Church Music University) in Rottenburg am Neckar, with which Valpo established an exchange partnership in 2009. Chorale member Emily German, a junior music and German major, currently is studying at the Hochschule and is the first Valpo student to do so.

German professor Dr. Sarah DeMaris said Valpo first began to send faculty members and students to Reutlingen, Germany, in 1968, but since then the connection to Germany has deepened to include not only Reutlingen University, but also the Eberhard-Karls-Universität in Tübingen, and the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik.

“These official ties only scratches the surface of the rich and abiding connections that members of the Valpo community have developed with Germans and Germany,” Dr. DeMaris said. “Research collaborations, marriages and friendships that reach into both business and government testify to the depth of those connections.  All universities are striving today for the sort of non-trivial international engagement that Valpo has sustained for decades in Germany."
