KALYN'S BLOG!

Kalyn February 22, 2010

I think I speak for everyone when I say, all that is running through my mind is "Let it be Friday, let it be Friday, let it be Friday..." Spring break is almost here; despite the snow, slush, and puddles. I just have to get through the rest of this week: projects and tests and then it is two weeks of freedom! Well, almost...I will still have to be applying for jobs and working at Hilltop, but no classes is a definite plus! After my exams and work on Friday I will be heading to Minneapolis for my nephew's first birthday! Yay, I am so excited :) This Spring break will also bring me to Madison, WI to visit my other nephew and Raleigh, NC to visit my parents and younger family. I get really excited when I have the opportunity to see my (extremely large) family, I feel like they abandoned me in Indiana. Talking about my family being large, just today I talked with a lady who knows my Grandpa and one whose sister is my sister's best friend. After discovering this she said, "small world" and I thought, "ahh, that's Valpo.."

It is funny to think that February has almost come and passed. Even though I am slightly dreading March for how busy it will keep me, I am really looking forward to all of the exciting events I have coming up! Here at the Guild, we're really cooking now! Literally, on Tuesday March 30, the Guild will be hosting a Life Skills Workshop: Cooking in a College Kitchen. The event will take place on campus in the International Multipurpose Kitchen at the Harre Union at 5:00 pm. We will only have room for about 25 students, so the first 25 to RSVP will get to participate in our Easy Eats Event! Be on the look out for more information coming your way.

March will also bring about the start of the Guild Campus Gift Grant. Applications will be available beginning in March and due by the end of March. I look forward to seeing what kind of contributions the Guild will give this year.

I hope you all have a fantastic break!

Yes, I counted each and every one of the 2,521 M&M's that were in the jar give-away for Valentine's Day. Don't worry, I wore a glove! Congratulations to our winner, Austin Koerner, who was only off by 105! I wonder what he did with all of those M&M's... He's probably a pretty popular guy in his dorm.

It will be a busy next few weeks for me before Spring Break begins! Here at the Guild we are working on the Guild Campus Gift Grant materials so that the application will be available by the end of this month...cross your fingers?! I also have the opportunity to assist in the Spring edition of the Guild Bulletin which is very exciting. I will have the chance to put together a few articles of my own! We're still in the brainstorming stage for a few pieces but I am already looking forward to the final publication. My other big project would be the life skills workshop we are working on putting together. I have really enjoyed the planning for this event and look forward to put all of our planning into action! Then there is class, which always keeps me busy...duh. As well as many exciting events with my sorority, like the initiation of our new members this weekend. I'll just go ahead and say it already, Congratulations Baby Owls! And also planning for AWC speakers, fireside chats, workshops, and recruitment events. All of the other events that our campus hosts, work, planning (and anticipating) Spring Break, the list just goes on and on.

It seems as though Spring isn't in our near future...are you ready for this snow storm?! I know I will wake up these next few mornings, pull my computer into bed, and check my email to see if classes and work have been cancelled. I'm crossing my fingers for at least  one snow day. Although I am originally from Wisconsin, my parents and younger siblings moved to North Carolina two and a half years ago. During these brutally cold Winter months I receive phone calls from my family saying, "yeah, well, it snowed a few inches this morning so school was cancelled." or, "it's supposed to snow tomorrow, so they cancelled school." I'd be lying if I said that I'm not just the smallest bit jealous.

With this lovers holiday approaching, it is now time for me to reveal one of my projects I have been working on. On Thursday, February 11 a jar full of M&M's will be on the counter at Freshens available for all students to place their guess as to how many M&M's are in the jar. As the game goes, the person who guesses the correct amount will win the whole jar!! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!  The winner will be announced Friday, February 12 on the Guild's Facebook Fanpage: Valparaiso University Guild. Well, now you all know how I will be spending my snow day if we get one, counting M&M's...

This is the perfect opportunity to win a sweet present for your loved one, especially if you're finding yourself short on cash! (Or, you can win it for yourself...) Another inexpensive Valentine's Day date idea would be going to the Dance Ensemble Production that is from Friday-Sunday. You'll find me in attendance Friday night!   Good luck Alison Herrell!

Is it February already?! I'm not sure I am ready to take on the shortest month of the year...  Hopefully Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) will fail to see his shadow tomorrow. There's nothing like speeding up Spring and bringing on some warmer weather! But back to busy February. In class, I feel like it is now the time that the tests start to pile up. I talked to someone who is supposed to have 4 tests this week, good luck! I am working on three big projects at the Guild office and putting together a special Valentine's Day treat from the Guild! It seems like all work, and little play... Fortunately, there are about 5 new movies that I, and probably every other female, wouldn't mind taking some time to go see. In lieu of a few movie nights, going to Evelyn Bay Coffee Company on Wednesday night would be just as fun. I could study for my tests, listen to a few VU music groups, and enjoy 25% off drinks; I'm thinking a snow white mocha, mmm! As I am sitting here, just listing the ways to spend money... I think about how awesome it is that Valpo is raising money for Haiti relief in so many ways. Organizations such as SALT, Valparaiso International Student Association, and Law School Students are leading the campaign, Valpo has a heart for Haiti and encouraging other organizations to take part, in order to raise their goal of $15,000!

January 25, 2010

Hi! Welcome to my first blog! I'm Kalyn, the Spring, 2010 Guild Intern...(obviously). I am excited to spend this semester working at the Guild office!

I guess I should introduce myself to you. I am a Senior, Biology and Public Relations Double Major; anxiously anticipating graduation in May. (Can someone say, "Yikes!") I am a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and I like to stay active on campus by being involved with organizations such as AWC and PRSSA. I am also involved off campus by working as a back-up lead teacher at Hilltop Neighborhood House over the past 3 years.

Fall of my Junior year at VU, I had the opportunity to study abroad for the semester. I studied in Reutlingen, Germany and made it to 13 countries! I would have to say that it was one of the best experiences of my life! Honestly, I could talk about my semester abroad for hours...example a) Once I returned to the States, I shared with my family all of my pictures I had accumulated over the semester. Yes, all 1,000 plus photos. Needless to say, they couldn't sit through more than a few pictures. The good thing is at that time I had 5 brothers, 5 sisters, 2 parents, 2 brother-in-laws, and my Grandma all present. So, I had an audience the entire time; only they began to "tag-team" who was watching! Well, enough about that...

Hopefully this blog will keep you updated about what is going on around campus and keep you in the loop with activities I am involved in at the Guild.

Currently, I am excited about the Fitness Classes that start Today, at 4:00 pm Yogalates! Only, I am still at my internship until 5:00...so I will see you at Wednesday's class!
