Il Postino

Il Postino

Welcome to our home page. We are presenting a movie review, some background The First-Year Core.

Here is some information about Il Postino: This showing of the movie Il Postino was played at the beginning of the second semester and was required for all CORE students to attend at the Neils Science Center. Why was this required for us to attend? We watched this movie during the Love section of our Core class. This movie helped us to identify the four types of love the C.S. Lewis talks about in the four loves. Mario has a friendship love with his companion, Pablo Neruda. He has a eros type of love with Beatrice, and an attachment type love with his passion towards becoming a poet someday. Mario also had a type of love with his country that grew with his awareness of the beauty that surrounded him. In class dicussions we talked about the love that was within this film and came to these conclusions.

Island of Capri

Here's a summary to help you get an understanding of what this is all about:

The beginning of the movie started off with the main character, Mario, longing to see the United States and get off of his island. Instead, he becomes a postman for one man, Pablo Neruda, the famous poet. Each day Mario delivers the mail for Neruda, they become closer companions and Mario's admiration for Pablo increased as the time passed. There friendship grew and Mario meet the girl of his dreams. He wanted to woo her in a fantastic way to win her heart, he thought that since Neruda had so many secret admirers due to his poetry, Mario thought that if he could use his poetry to get the girl he loved. He finally got her to be with him and they grew close and were married. Neruda had been in excile from Chile due to his strong feelings toward Communism. His time was up on the little island of Capri, and he was forced to leave Mario and Beatrice. Mario was deeply sadden by his moving away and felt that he and Neruda should keep in touch. He named his first child after Pablo Neruda, even after he recieved over and over again no reply from the famous poet. Mario also came to realize the beauty that lied in his island and he decided to make a recording of the things that made it beautiful for Neruda to appreciate someday. Mario died on a day that he was supposed to have read some of his own poetry concerning Communism. The movie ends with Neruda listening to the recording that Mario made and the impact that Neruda had on him was apparent in this ending and throughout the whole movie. Here is the beginning of a poem that was written by Pablo Neruda:

Ask me where have I been and I'll tell you: "Things keep on happening." I must talk of the rubble that darkens the clay; of the river's duration, destroying itself; I know only the things that the birds have abandoned, or the ocean behind me, or my sorrowing sister. Why the distinctions of place? Why should day follow day? Why must the blackness of nighttime collect in our mouths? Why the dead?
