Requirements

Education:

High School Diploma

Experience/Skills:

  • Drivers license required
  • Must be 21 years old
  • Attend and be a graduate from the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy
  • Complete the 40 hour pre-basic training
  • Certified in fire arms and defensive tactics
  • Maintain a minimum of 15 hours continued training per year
  • Maintain current training and certifications on all items that pertain to his/her field, first aid, hazmat, evoe, etc.
  • Submit to a background investigation
  • Submit to psychological and other testing as determined by the Chief of Police
  • Complete a 14 week Field Training Program (560 hours minimum) with a certified Field Training Officer, prior to being allowed to be a "solo" Patrol Officer
  • Officers then will be on a "Probationary" standing after the above items have been met. Probationary time to be determined by the Chief of Police

Job Summary:

To submit the mission of the Valparaiso University and Valparaiso University Police Department by proactive patrolling campus to ensure the safety, sercurity, well being of the university's students, staff, guests and property.

Detect criminal activity, traffice violations, and enforce federal, state, and university parking rules, and regulations.

Respond to emergency calls of service, which include fire, medical, suspicious persons, assaults, alarms, break-ins, thefts, alcohol, and drug activities.

Respond to non-emergency calls of service such as lock-outs, student transports, reports of criminal activity not in progress.

Work special activities such as graduation, homecoming, Vespers, and sporting events.

Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
