Requirements

Education:

Bachelor's degree, preferably in a computer-related field

Experience/Skills:

Required: Minimum 2 years practical experience; working knowledge of: multiple server operating systems, including Linux/UNIX and Windows, and networking protocols (particularly TCP/IP); self motivation, willingness to work during off hours maintenance and be on call 24x7; ability to work under pressure.

Desired: Working knowledge of VMare ESX/Virtual Infrastructure 3, NetWare, Solaris, Apache, Postfix SMTP, Project management, Identity management, Directory management (particularly eDirectory and LDAP), Groupwise administration, Scripting and automation, Database concepts (especially MS-SQL, Orade and MySQL), SAN experience (especially EMC CX ad IBM DS4000 series).

Job Summary:

Assistant with the planning, implementation and management of central university computer systems. Daily duties include work with operating systems, security, network connections, and applications software; analyze needs and create custom solutions for the campus community.

This position provides indirect support to the University community via various systems and servers. This service supports communication and storage of office electronic documents, email and other applications and is therefore critical to the operation of the University. The person in this position may be called upon to provide direct advice or assistance to any students, faculty, or staff member up to and including the President.

  • Responsible for configuring, managing, and maintaining servers and systems critical to the mission of Valparaiso University such as web servers, mail servers, database server, and transaction server.
  • Establish, maintain, and monitor electronic and physical security measures to protect University resources and information. Perform regular and frequent network system backups and safeguard backup media so information can be retrieved.
  • Contribute meaningfully to design and implementation of systems and networks critical to the mission of Valparaiso University.
  • As assigned, consult with Deans, Directors, Department Chairs, and other University officials regarding their needs for systems, networks, hardware, and software; and advance these needs to the IT strategic and tactical planning process.
  • Use HEAT ticket system to determine work to be done and priorities. Document all work as it is done; complete and close all records in HEAT system as work is completed.
  • Be prepared and willing to accept on call duty as assigned.
  • Participate in establishing and updating standard configurations and procedures, and adhere to established standards.
