- Successful completion of an approved Family Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current Indiana RN license.
- Eligible for an approval Board Certification (ANA sponsored) as a Family Nurse Practitioner or Adult Nurse Practitioner.
- One to three years experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
- Three to five years previous professional nursing experience.
- BLS certification.
- Eligible for prescriptive authority in the state of Indiana.
- Is able to work autonomously as well as in collaboration with the University physicians.
- Ability to interact effectively with others; interest in and ability to relate to college age students.
- Ability to maintain good patient relations in all formats of communication and adhere to total patient confidentiality/ethics.
- Understanding, appreciation and commitment to the goals and philosophy of Valparaiso University.
- Completion of annual HIPAA and safety training as well as competency skills checklists. Adheres to Guiding Behaviors.
- This position requires the employee to be able to stand for prolonged periods of time, with occasional stooping, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs. Minimal sitting. The position has a moderate amount of stress, during high-volume times, requiring the ability to multi-task, with the telephones, patients, and multiple simultaneous demands from support staff. Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations. The employee is expected to maintain CPR/AED certification.

Job Summary: | The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) provides health care to the students of Valparaiso University through the Student Health Center under the guidance of the Indiana State Nurse Practice Act. The FNP holds state licensure and national certification, which qualifies the FNP to work autonomously as well as in collaboration with medical, nursing and allied health care providers to diagnose and treat the patient.
- Provides primary care to students as the Health Center.
- Performs appropriate assessment, which may include physical examination, client, family and social history.
- Identifies health risks and needs based on normal and abnormal findings obtained from history, examination and/or laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Diagnoses and manages health care problems.
- Develops care/treatment plans that meet the needs of the client and maintains quality care.
- Refers clients to other health care providers as deemed appropriate.
- Prescribes appropriate pharmacological agents and treatments and nonpharmacological therapies.
- Performs point of care testing.
- Performs independent evaluations, treatments and procedures within the scope of practice in routine and emergency situations.
- Records findings and need for follow-up and/or referrals including ordering laboratory and other diagnostic procedures.
- Serves as a health care resource, interdisciplinary consultant and patient advocate.
- Adheres to all pertinent regulatory agency guidelines.
- Develops and presents educational programs for patients. Is involved in student educational outreach which may include conducting programs at the Health Center or in other campus facilities.
- Provides nursing and medical services to students emphasizing health promotion, health maintenance, illness management, and disease prevention.
- Exhibits sensitivity to the diverse cultural backgrounds of Valparaiso University students.
- Maintains current knowledge, skills and certification by attending educational programs.
- Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
