Education:

A Masters or Doctorate in Counceling or Clinical Psychology, MSW, CMHC, or related mental health fields.

Experience/Skills:

  • Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology, MSW, Master's in CMHC or equivalent.
  • Appropriate licensure, certification or eligibility required within three years of hire.
  • Excellent clinical, outreach, consultation and supervision skills are needed.
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in the field of alcohol and drug education and/or treatment and with college counseling center experience.

Job Summary:

Responsibilities:

On a three-fifths time basis, serve as Coordinator of the campus alcohol and drug education program. Responsibilities include administration of the program and the provision of alcohol and drug related counseling, outreach, consultation, and peer educator training. As a two-fifths time staff therapist in the Counseling Center, provide intakes and individual/group counseling and psychotherapy to students with emotional, social, career, academic, and addiction issues. Provide consultation to faculty and staff. Conduct crisis intervention work. Supervise graduate level mental health trainees.

The Counseling Services staff includes a director, two coordinators/therapist, one generalist staff therapist, a substance abuse specialist, a sexual trauma specialist, a consulting psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, and two-three graduate level mental health trainees. The staff maintains very close relationships with the Health Center, Career Center, Student Affairs Dean, Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the other operations within Student Affairs. In addition, Counseling Services enjoys a high level of respect, visibility, and support in the institution and is active in combined projects with the different colleges and academic departments.

Valparaiso University is a residential campus of 3,800 undergraduate and graduate students located in Valparaiso, Indiana. The University is a comprehensive institution with the majority of students graduating from professional programs with a strong liberal arts background. There are separate colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing, and a special honors program (Christ College) for academically superior students. In addition to the law school, there are graduate programs in psychology, education, nursing, business, and liberal arts. Typically, there are adjunct teaching opportunities for staff with department of instruction depending on the educational background of the candidate. Valparaiso Indiana is a city of 40,000 located 13 miles from the baches at Lake Michigan and 50 miles from downtown Chicago. There are 600,000 person living in Lake and Porter Counties.
