B.A. Journalism, Communication, Sports Management or related field. Experience/Skills:
- 5+ years experience in the sports media relations and sports information fields.
- Must possess strong writing, editing, and managerial skills.
- Capable speaker, organized, confident, professional, and focused with the media.
- High comfort level with on-line tools and techniques used with media.
- Strong knowledge in the use of statistical programs for all sports.
- Familiarity with content management systems for website development as well as Horizon League and NCAA rules and regulations.
- B.A. or higher with a background in journalism, communication, sports management, media relations or related field.
- Demonstrated creative thinker in developing editorial content and solutions to communication challenges.
- A passion and interest in working with and developing media relationships.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Familiar with Associated Press Style Guide.
- Ability to work independently in a highly collaborative, cross-functional teaming atmosphere.
This position is a full-time role, based at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.
Job Summary:
The Associate Director of Athletics for Media Relations is responsible for development and implementation of public relations and media strategies for the advancement of the university's 21 varsity athletics program. This position will oversee and manage the sports media relations office, athletics website, Hall of Fame program, statistical data, photography, and history assets of the Athletic Department. The successful candidate must possess exceptional writing and editing skills and have a proven ability to build positive relationships with coaches and media.
This position will be a member of the Integrated Marketing and Communications (IMC) division, working closely with the IMC Creative team and the Athletics Department to develop the promotional materials and maintain the historical records required to enhance Crusader athletics.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a strategic media relations plan for Valparaiso University athletics, while also serving as liaison and "pitch" artist with the local, regional, and national media.
- Create strategic print and web solutions for the promotion of multiple D-I athletic sports.
- Travel throughout various athletic seasons, including overnights, weekends and some holidays.
- Understand and adhere to NCAA regulations for the Valpo athletics programs.
- Compile and update historical data and record books for Crusader athletics.
- Manage nominations for Valpo's Athletics Hall of Fame.
- Supervise staff, including a student team.
- Ability to work independently within an empowered team model, with a propensity to take action and bring solutions.
- Proven competence in relationship management.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
