Experience/Skills:

The Assistant Athletic Director of Advancement should possess:

  • Demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting outright and deferred gifts in excess of $50,000 or more.
  • A minimum of three years successful moves-based development experience in major and planned gift fundraising, with preference to higher-education athletic fundraising.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the principles and techniques associated with planned giving vehicles.
  • A history of effectiveness and conform dealing with high-level donor prospects including the skills to articulate campus priorities and capture the interest of the prospect.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with internal and external constituencies which includes a proven track record of strong interpersonal communication, listening, relationship-building, negotiating, and collaborating skills. Must be able to work independently and as a part of the Major Gifts team.
  • Proven ability to work collegially with a diverse set of constituents, including donors and alumni, professional financial and legal advisors and Advancement colleagues; proven ability to work with confidential information.
  • Strong, oral, written, and presentational skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • A willingness to travel extensively, including extended work during weekend/evening hours.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Horizon League and NCAA rules and regulations is preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • The ability and willingness to be a spokesperson for the Lutheran mission and character of Valparaiso University as well as the mission, vision and values of Valparaiso Athletics.
  • An undergraduate degree with a preference toward an advanced degree or its equivalent is preferred.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Athletic Director of Advancement will be responsible for securing major gifts of $50,000 and above to the Valparaiso University Athletic Department. The Assistant Athletic Director will be reporting to the Athletic Director, will manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospective donors and will be expected to cultivate, solicit and steward these important alumni and friends of the university. This position also will play a critical role in identifying and engaging new prospects for the next comprehensive campaign effort.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Athletic Director of Advancement will:

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit major and planned gifts for Valparaiso University Athletic programs.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 financially qualified households, with independent responsibility to develop and execute strategies leading to a solicitation for each prospect.
  • Actively seek to expand the prospect pool via identifying, qualifying and engaging new prospects.
  • Establish collaborative and productive relationships with the administration and coaches in the Athletic Department, and become knowledgeable regarding Athletic priorities, programs, activities and evens in order to advance the interests of Valpo athletic programs and more fully engage alumni, parents and friends.
  • Serve as the Athletic programming liaison and inter-coordinate projects and strategies with the Athletic Director and university Advancement colleagues.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and ambassador of Valpo Athletics to internal and external constituencies.
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned.
