Bachelor's degree, preferred. Experience/Skills:
- Experience in an academic library.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in original cataloging and authority control.
- Knowledge of AACR2, LC classification, LCSH, USMARC formats, and online cataloging management procedures and techniques.
- Ability to achieve accuracy and compliance with national and local standards for bibliographic control.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational skills.
- Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and ability to work with individuals or groups with diverse backgrounds.
Job Summary:
Valparaiso University Law School invites applicants for the position of Cataloging Assistant.
Valparaiso University Law School is located in Northwest Indiana and is part of a residential community with excellent public school and other resources. It is approximately ten miles from Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as well as one hour form downtown Chicago. The law school is an integral part of Valparaiso University, Lutheran affiliated institution founded in 1859 and know for its outstanding liberal arts education and professional programs. The Cataloging Assistant for the Law Library will assist with cataloging, classifying, and organizing materials of all formats in the library collection, providing the means for access to the printed, microform, electronic, and audiovisual resources of the law library.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with original cataloging and classification of library materials (primarily microforms and electronic resources), including searching for and identifying bibliographic records, determining all entries and establishing proper descriptive data, entering all materials online in the OCLC database, and downloading records to the library's integrated online system, and public online catalog and performing copy cataloging of library materials as required.
- Assisting in ongoing projects, such as batch loading of large sets of MARC records and revising records for serials, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and microforms to meet changed conditions and needs.
- Assisting in the maintenance of the online public catalog, including name and subject authority work and adding links to online resources.
- Other technical services duties as assigned by the Cataloging & Acquisitions Librarian.
