Education:

BA or higher degree.

Experience/Skills:

  • B.A. or higher, in journalism or communications, or a related field.
  • Eight years' experience in writing and editing for professional publications or work in internal communications. Strong written and verbal skills, with a solid portfolio of work that demonstrates skill in analysis, creativity, writing, and editing.
  • Self-starter with excellent project management abilities who is able to shepherd projects from concept to completion, enlisting the support and enthusiasm of others in the process.
  • Can serve as part of a team for special event planning, offering creative ideas, managing details and implementing plans.
  • Demonstrated creative thinker in developing editorial content and solutions to marketing communication challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well alone, one-on-one, or as part of a larger team.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiar with Associated Press Style Guide.
  • Willing and able to support the mission of Valparaiso University.

Job Summary:

The Associate Director of Creative Services - Promotional Writer for Integrated Marketing and Communications supports the mission of Valparaiso University by helping design and implement strong marketing communications strategies that advance the mission and vision of Valpo with members of the campus community. The Associate Director must possess effective writing and editing skills, the ability to build positive relationship with members of the campus community and offer solutions to an array of marketing communications challenges. As part of the above, the Associate Director will work closely with other members of the IMC team to coordinate internal communications with related marketing activities.

Reporting Relationship:

  • Reports to the Vice President of IMC.
  • Works with other IMC staff on projects such as media relations, internal communications, special events, fundraising and campaign communications, alumni communications, and communications to prospective students.
  • Collaborates with other individuals on campus including administrators, faculty and deans to achieve a variety of marketing communication goals, with a focus on internal communications.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Understands the mission and vision of VU and can effectively communicate it to an audience.
  • Supports the work of the IMC team as it strives to achieve goals related to increasing student recruitment and raising funds for the University.
  • Strong project manager able to conceive and follow through with ideas to help build pride and affinity among members of the campus community by supervising communications to the entire campus audience.
  • Prepares a strong overall internal communications strategy, including themes, messages and tools.
  • Helps determine the most effective stories that will advance the Valpo brand and writes and edits internal communication messages. Covers internal events as a reporter and ensures photography and video coverage at events as needed.
  • Creates a plan for internal communication during and following crisis situations, and helps build campus awareness of the plan.
  • Revises internal communication messages for distribution via other IMC communications.
  • Helps supervise student workers who write content for internal communications.
  • Assist in writing speeches and other messages for the President (as needed).
  • Works closely with other campus administrators, faculty and deans on internal communications projects.
  • Participates on committees designed to strengthen and improve VU's marketing communications.
